League champions Al-Ittihad made it a League and Cup double this season in Libyan football after defeating Al-Tirsana 3-2 on penalties at the June 11 Stadium in Tripoli in the final of the Al-Fateh Cup competition
It is also the sixth time that Al-Ittihad have won the trophy after victories in seasons 1991/92, 1998/99, 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2006/07.
But this time Al-Ittihad really had to fight hard for the success and twice had to come from behind to win against a team appearing in their first-ever final of the competition.
Ittihad showed their character the first time when they levelled the score through Ahmed Alzowi in the 38th minute, that is nine minutes after Samir Al-Wahaj had given the underdogs the lead.
The match proved to be well balanced but no more goals were scored till the end of normal time that ended 1-1.Therefore with the match locked at honours even the teams had to go into extra time.
Either side could have scored but when Samir Al-Wahaj gave Al-Tirsana the lead for the second time on 91 minutes it looked curtains for the champions.
However, Al-Ittihad stuck to their name of champions when they levelled immediately after one minute in a swift reaction that resulted in Alzowie again scoring their goal.
Despite some more near misses, extra time produced no further goals so it was then down to the penalty-taking contest to decide the outcome.
Al-Ittihadís experience really told as they managed to win the shoot-out 3-2.
But Al-Tirsana should be commended for their performance after a most satisfying league campaign that placed them seventh in the championship ladder.
It is the third time that Al-Ittihad have won the double of league and cup repeating feats achieved in 2004/05 and 2006/07.
