Al Qathafi's Third Son Arrested as Many Aides Flee Country 22/08/2011 19:42:00
The third son of the Libyan leader Muammar Al Qathafi, Sa’adi, has been arrested, while many former aides of Libya’s long time dictator have fled the country to Tunisia or arrested on trying to flee.
The whereabouts of the leader himsel are as yet unknown after the capital Tripoli fell into the hands of the rebels yesterday. The president of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) Mr. Mustafa Abdul Jalil said earlier today that the council did not know whether Al Qathafi is in Libya or out of it.
Rumours are doing the rounds that Al Qathafi may be in Algeria right now. Others maintain that he could still be in the capital away from the Bab al-Azziziyah barracks or in the south of Libya.
The arrest of Sa’adi which comes 24 hours from the arrest of his two brothers Seif Al Islam and Mohammed indicates that the Libyan rebels are indeed bringing the country under their control.
While Sa’adi is known for his bizarre short-term and unsuccessful football career and the holding of a military rank of a general, Seif had played a major political role in Libya in the last seven years introducing himself as a reformer and a savvy diplomat for his father.
Mohammed, the elder son of Al Qathafi, is currently under house arrest along with his mother in a villa in Tripoli. He has been until yesterday the head of the most lucrative public communications and Postal Services Company that control all mobile phones in the country. He is also the chairman of the Libyan Olympic Committee.
A number of other close aides of Al Qathafi have also been arrested or fled.
Al Qathafi’s personal guard, Saad Mas’oud, was arrested yesterday near Khums city east of Tripoli as he was trying to flee the country by sea.
Meanwhile, Al Qathafi’s personal secretary and lately the CEO of an investment company worth ten billion Dollars, Bashir Salah, is under investigation for his attempt to sell la arge amount of gold to international traders. He was arrested after arriving in Tunisia.
The head of Al Qathafi’s radio and TV apparatus Abdullah Mansour who is also a military officer and for decades a dominant figure in this imortant Libyan sector has also fled to Tunisia along with Al Qathafi’s Prime Minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi.
Meanwhile, Libyan rebels succeeded today to take control of the radio and TV buildings resulting on the putting off air, Al Qathafi’s satellite TV channels.
