Libya's Secretary of Public Security, General Abdulfattah Yunis, held talks on Tuesday with Egypt's Minister of Manpower and Immigration focused on the growing problem of illegal Egyptian workers in Libya.
As the situation has become intolerable regarding the huge number of illegal workers in Libya which is estimated to be at more than one million, Libya is undertaking concrete measures whereby Law no 6 of 1987 would be put into effect, JANA reported.
The law regulates the presence of foreign workers in the country.
General Yunis explained to the Egyptian minister the pattern of procedures followed by Libyan authorities and the need for full cooperation on the part of Egypt in this regard.
Meanwhile, Libyan officials have extended the deadline for foreign workers until 30 July instead of 30 June to get their legal status in the country sorted out. The extension is publicly directed only to benefit Egyptian workers.
The Egyptian official assured that her ministry would implement regulatory measures in order to facilitate the entering of Egyptian workers to Libya in a way that complies with Libyan laws.
She also called for establishing a Libyan-Egyptian joint committee for such purpose and for regulating the entrance of Egyptian goods such as food stuffs and medicine to the country.
Libyan security have always been combating numerous cases of illegal smuggling across borders with Egypt as well as a growing number of organized crime originated in this neighboring but rather poor Arab country.
A large segment of the Libyan public have welcomed the new measures to organize foreign workers as there has been lately much resentment of the business crimes and violation of laws by Egyptians who have penetrated all parts of the country in all sectors.
