Libya football wrote a very important page in the history of the sport when it won the 2014 edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2014) by beating Ghana 4-3 on penalties after the match and extra time at the Cape Town Stadium in South Africa failed to produce a goal.

Then, as this Saturday in the final, of the African Nations Championship, their opponents in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations that Libya itself hosted, were the Black Stars of Ghana.

Libya have managed to go beyond their expectations and following a 5-4 victory at the end of a penalty-shooting contest in their semi-final clash against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein on Wednesday, qualified to contest the final of the African Nations Championship on Saturday against Ghana, who also got through following a shoot-off with Nigeria, winning it 4-1.

At the end of a lacklustre encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium Libya beat Gabon 4-2 on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the African Nations Championships in South Africa and will now meet Zimbabwe for a place in the final. Ghana managed to get the otehr quarter-final place by beating RD Congo 1-0.

Nigeria completed one of the most amazing comebacks in modern football when they came from three goals down at half time to beat a shocked Morocco 4-3 and progress to the semi-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2014) tournament in a compelling game played at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday. On the same day, Zimbabwe qualified to the last four stage by virtue of a 2-1 win over Mali.

Former champions Democratic Republic of Congo came from behind to book a place in the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship in South Africa with Group D toppers Gabon following a 2-1 Group D victory over Burundi that also eliminated the losers from the competition. Gabon won the group at the end of a 4-2 win over Mauritania.
